* NY 31's original alignment through Brockport followed Clarkson-Sweden Townline Rd. and West Ave. (SR 943B) to Main St. (NY 19), then south along Main St. through downtown before rejoining its current alignment south of the village. NY 31 was rerouted around Brockport in the early 1980's.
* In Baldwinsville, NY 31 originally followed Downer St. to Syracuse St. (NY 48), then north to Genesee St., where NY 31 rejoined its current route alongside NY 370. In the mid 1980's, the northern extension of I-690, NY 690, was built. Upon completion, NY 31 was realigned to its present course, running concurrent with NY 690 then joining NY 370 west of the village.
* NY 31's eastern terminus was originally located at the junction with NY 365 in Verona. NY 31 was extended east when the NY 234 designation was removed in 1981.
