The second alignment of NY 317 was in Rensselaer County along N. Lake Ave (Rensselaer CR 144) between NY 7 and NY 142 near Brunswick Center. That alignment was decomissioned on April 14, 1980.

The current NY 317 was assigned on April 1, 2003 to replace the NY 31C designation.
