History:

NY 26 pretty much follows its original course. However, the section between Carthage and Theresa had to be realigned to accomodate expansion of the Fort Drum Military Base in the mid 1950s. The original alignment in this area followed NY 3 from Carthage to North Wilna. The section from North Wilna and Antwerp was dismantled for the base. From Antwerp to Theresa, NY 26 followed present day Jefferson CR 194 before rejoining its present alignment.

Following the realignment, NY 26 overlapped with NY 3 from Carthage to Great Bend, then followed its current alignment to Evans Mills before overlapping with US 11 to Antwerp. In 1977, NY 26 was truncated to Evans Mills and the section north of Antwerp was renumbered as the second incarnation of NY 283. Three years later, NY 283 was decommissioned from Antwerp to Theresa and NY 26 was re-extended north along its present alignment. At the same time, NY 26's alignment from Carthage to Great Bend was shifted to its present alignment south and west of the Black River.

Recommendation:

Truncating NY 26's south end to NY 17C in Endicott. South of Endicott, we recommend renumbering the current alignment as NY 267 to match PA 267 at the state line. The original NY 267 was located in Erie and Genesee Counties and was decommissioned in 1980.
