 NY 89's original alignment north of Seneca Falls followed present day NY 414. The two designations would swap alignments in 1959.

Following the swap, NY 89 extended north along Auburn St. into Wolcott and ending at Ridge Rd., which carried the original alignment of US 104 (now NY 104). NY 89 was truncated to its present north end in the early 1970's with the construction of the NY 104 bypass around Wolcott.
