Name(s):

Montrose Dr., Conklin Rd., Conklin Ave., Tompkins St., Brandywine Ave., Brandywine Hwy., Main St., Lincoln Ave., Concord Ave., Oneida St., Chestnut St., Duanesburg Rd., Curry Rd., Crosstown Arterial, Troy-Schenectady Rd., Adirondack Northway, Hoosick St.
History:

Binghamton Area: The original alignment of NY 7 in the Binghamton area followed the current routing north to Robinson St. in Binghamton, then west to Chenango Ave. where NY 7 continued north into Port Dickinson. NY 7 moved to its present alignment when Brandywine Highway was built in the 1960's. In the early 1970's, the section from Chenango Bridge to Port Crane was upgraded to interstate standards to accomodate the new I-88 expressway which opened in 1974, but was not completed until 1989 when the Port Dickinson to Chenango Bridge section was upgraded and connected to I-81. NY 7 continued east from Port Crane to Sanitaria Springs along what is now NY 7B. NY 7 moved to the I-88 alignment upon completion of construction of the expressway. Past Sanitaria Springs, the original alignment of NY 7 has been retained to near Rotterdam.

Albany Area: At the NY 158 junction in Rotterdam, instead of turning east on Curry Rd. as it does today, NY 7 turned north onto Broadway (now Schenectady CR 161) and followed it into Schenectady. NY 7 then followed Weaver St., Washington Ave., and Union St. before joining the present routing in Niskayuna. The routing in this area was changed to its present course with the construction of I-890. Further east, NY 7 continued east to Watervliet and Troy along its present course and what is now NY 2 before turning north and duplexing with US 4 before returning to its present course. When "Alternate Route 7" and the Collar City Bridge were completed in 1981, NY 7 was relocated to its present course.

Recommendation:

Truncating NY 7's western terminus to Port Crane at the interchange with I-88 and NY 369. NY 7 would be taken off I-88 and rerouted along the length of the current NY 7B alignment. Between Binghamton and Port Dickinson, the existing NY 7 alignment would become a northern extension of NY 363. South of US 11 in Binghamton, the NY 7 alignment would be renumbered as NY 171 (currently assigned in Herkimer County) to match an extended PA 171 at the Pennsylvania state line, and NY 229 south of the current NY 7A intersection, serving as a partial match to PA 29 at the Pennsylvania state line.
