Western Terminus: I-87 / NY 7, Latham
Eastern Terminus: MA Line at Petersburg (Continues as MA 2)
Length: 30.89 miles (49.73 km)
Orientation: East-West
Counties: Albany, Rensselaer
Cities: Watervliet, Troy
Villages: None
Towns:
Colonie, Brunswick, Grafton, Petersburgh
Name(s): Troy-Schenectady Rd., 19th St., Ferry St., Congress St., River St., Brunswick Rd., Main St.
History:

NY 2's original alignment was a carryover from the 1924-30 route system and followed what is now Steuben CR 115 (PA Line-Erwin), NY 417 (Erwin-Painted Post), NY 415 (Painted Post-Wayland), and NY 15 (Wayland-Rochester). In 1939, the US 15 designation was extended north into New York following the original NY 2 alignment. NY 2 was then moved to what is now the NY 96 alignment in the Finger Lakes region of western New York and, coincidentally, replaced the original NY 15 alignment. The designation remained there for three years before swapping alignments with NY 96 and moving to its current alignment, enabling New York's designation to match that of Massachusetts.

NY 2 was extended west to Latham when NY 7 was relocated to the north in 1981.

Recommendation:

Reassigning NY 2 as NY 402 to eliminate duplication with US 2 in northern New York. The new number would serve as a partial match to MA 2.
