The majority of the route was built in the late 1950s and the designation replaced the short-lived I-487 designation in 1961. I-287 was to extend across Long Island Sound and linking up with NY 135 in Nassau County. But the plan was shot down in 1973. The last section to be completed was the section from Montvale, NJ to Suffern in 1994.
