Assigned in 1926, US 1 entered New York through the Holland Tunnel and followed NY 1A alignment until 1931 when the George Washington Bridge was completed and US 1 was moved to where it enters New York today. From 1931 until 1977, US 1 followed US 9 up Broadway for a short distance before splitting and crossing the Washington Heights Bridge into the Bronx. In the Bronx, US 1 followed University Ave. before meeting Fordham Rd. and picking up its present course. In 1963, the Cross-Bronx Expressway was completed. However, the US 1 designation would not move to its present course until 1977. |
