NY 179 was originally assigned along parts of present day NY 180, NY 12E, Jefferson CR 179, and NY 12 in northwestern Jefferson County. The original alignment followed the current NY 180 alignment from Baggs Corners to Limerick. Then it duplexed with NY 12E to Chaumont, then continued north along Jefferon CR 179 to Chaumont before continuing along a duplex with NY 12 to Clayton. The designation was dropped in 1963 but would resurface five years later in suburban Buffalo.

The current alignment was originally limited to the section west of US 62. It would be extended east to the Thruway (I-90) in 1980 and to US 20 in 2001.
