I-690 was opened in the early 1970's and extended west in 1988 with the reconfiguration of the I-90/Thruway interchange and opening of NY 690 (Originally, westbound I-690 traffic wanting to get on the Thruway had to make a left turn at a traffic signal). There have been several plans to extend I-690 eastward to the Fayetteville area. However all of those ideas have been shot down. There are no plans to extend the route to the east at this time.

The I-690 traffic signal on I-690 east. Until 2019, the signal served traffic entering I-690 from the upper parking lots during the New York State Fair which is held every summer for ten days, ending on Labor Day, and was only in use during this time. State Troopers manually control the signal from the median.
