NY 254 was originally assigned to present day US 20A and Ontario CR 32 between Geneseo and Canandaigua (The eastern terminus was truncated to NY 64 in Bristol in 1931). The designation would be dropped by 1939 when US 20A was established.

Present day NY 254 was assigned in the mid 1960s to replace the NY 32B designation.
