The current NY 201 alignment was assigned in September 1971.

The Johnson City traffic circle, a sight of numerous traffic delays and accidents, was reconfigured into a modified diamond interchange in the mid 2000s.

Recommendation:

Upgrade NY 201 to Interstate standards (The entire length is controlled access) and reassign as I-x86 when the I-86 designation is extended into Broome County.
