In Sullivan and Ulster Counties, NY 55 followed present day NY 55A along the northern side of the Rondout Reservoir until the mid 1940s when NY 55 was moved to the southern side.

East of Pawling, NY 55 originally followed what would become NY 341 and currently Dutchess CR 67 to the Connecticut line while NY 341 followed NY 55's current alignment. The designations swapped alignments in 1934.
