NY 283 was originally assigned to River Rd. (Tioga CRs 4 and 6) between the Pennsylvania state line near Nichols and Owego. The western end was truncated to Nichols in 1948 and the designation was removed altogether in 1970 when part of the road was dismantled for construction of the Southern Tier Expressway (NY 17).

In the late 1970s, NY 283 was briefly assigned to present day Jefferson CR 194 from Antwerp to Theresa and NY 26 from Theresa to Alexandria Bay.

Present day NY 283 was assigned in 1980 and originally extended into Fort Drum. The eastern end was truncated to its current location in 1993.
