NY 283 was originally assigned to River Rd. (Tioga CRs 4 and 6) between the Pennsylvania state line near Nichols and Owego. The western end was truncated to Nichols in 1948 and the designation was removed altogether in 1970 when part of the road was dismantled for construction of the Southern Tier Expressway (NY 17).
Replaced By: Tioga CRs 4, 6, and 25
