History: The Nassau Expressway was built in segments between the 1960s and 1990 with the initial segments getting the I-78 designation. In 1989, the Queens County section was given the I-878 designation while the Nassau County section was given the NY 878 designation. One year later, the Queens County section was reassigned as NY 878. The plan was for NY 878 to be one continuous controlled access route. However the terrain in the area makes any construction cost prohibitive. Engineers have been continuing to study ways to link the two segments together.
