NY 355 was originally aligned from West Seneca to Williamsville via present day NY 277, NY 33, and Cayuga Rd. (Erie CR 245). The alignment was reduced to the Cayuga Rd. section in 1935 and decommissioned altogether in 1937. NY 355 would resurface in Rensselaer County in 1946 on its present course in Wynantskill, and extended to its current eastern terminus in 1980 with the decommissioning of NY 154.
