In 1969, NY 188 was assigned to Vestal Parkway between Owego and Vestal in the western suburbs of Binghamton after NY 17 was moved to its present alignment on the Southern Tier Expressway. Residents were concerned that the NY 188 designation would cause confusion among motorists looking for the recently built I-81 or the soon to be built I-88, so the designation was changed to NY 434 in 1970.
Replaced By: NY 434
