The original NY 187 alignment was assigned to Franklin CR 53 between Bangor (NY 11B) and North Bangor (US 11) and briefly extended east to Malone via an overlap with NY 11B. The designation would be dropped in 1938 and replaced with NY 122.

The current NY 187 alignment was assigned in the 1940s.
