NY 164's original alignment followed present day NY 145 north of Cobleskill in Schoharie County from 1930-40. The designation then moved to Yonkers and The Bronx where it followed McLean Ave., 238th St., Nereid Ave., Baychester Ave., and Bruckner Blvd. where it would remain until 1970.

The current alignment was assigned in 1970 to replace a portion of NY 216.
