NY 122 was assigned in 1938 along what is now Franklin CR 53 between Bangor (NY 11B) and North Bangor (US 11). This two mile segment remained unchanged until 1980 when the designation was extended north to Westville (NY 37) and then east to Burke (US 11). Around 1990, the north-south section was decommissioned leaving the east-west section which is the present day alignment.
