It was realigned in 1936 along Albany CRs 352, 360, 359, and 353, from Medusa to Rensselaerville and truncated to its current location in Rensselaerville two years later (The western extension shown on some maps as late as 1971).

At the east end, NY 85 was originally assigned along New Scotland Rd. and New Scotland Ave. into Albany before ending at US 20 at Washington Park. NY 85 was gradually shifted onto its current expressway and super-2 alignment from the 1960s through 2007.
