History: |
NY 70's original alignment began at US 15 (current NY 415) in Avoca. NY 70 followed the current alignment of Steuben CR 70A to North Hornell. At North Hornell, NY 70 turned north and ran concurrent with NY 21 and NY 36. NY 70 would continue to run alongside NY 36 to Arkport before splitting and continuing west on the length Reference Route 961F before joining its current alignment east of Canaseraga. NY 70's north end was originally located at the intersection with Allegany CR 15B (former NY 408 extension) in Garwoods. NY 70's alignment underwent many changes during the 1970's. In 1972, the southern sections of NY 70 were moved to the new Southern Tier Expressway between Exits 36 (I-390) and 34 (NY 21/NY 36). When the NY 17 designation was moved to the Southern Tier Expressway, NY 70 was moved back to it's original alignment. In the late 1970's, NY 70 would be truncated from Avoca to near Canaseraga at the south (east) end, and extended from Garwoods to Portageville at the north (west) end. NY 70 would also be realigned over the NY 70A alignment between Canaseraga and NY 36. |
