History: Known as the Robert Moses State Parkway from its opening in 1964 until June 2016. It was originally constructed as one continuous four lane highway. But a section in downtown Niagara Falls was closed off to traffic in the 1970s. Low traffic counts, safety concerns related to freezing spray from the American Falls during the winter months, and long term concerns about the effect of traffic usage so close to the gorge were among the reasons given for the closure.
Since the early 2000s, the northern segment of the parkway has gradually been reduced to two lanes with the portions no longer being used for vehicular traffic being reallocated as bike and pedestrian paths. There are long term plans to dismantle the parkway north of Fort Niagara State Park. Low traffic counts have been cited as the reason for the changes. |
