The current NY 185 alignment was assigned on November 1, 2008. It previously carried the NY 347 and NY 8 designations until the late 1960s when it became Reference Route 910L.

NY 185 was previously assigned in St. Lawrence County between NY 37 in Hammond to NY 58 in Brasie Corners. That alignment was decommissioned April 10, 1980 and is now covered by St. Lawrence CRs 3 and 8.
