Southern Terminus: Herkimer CR 145 / Herkimer CR 185, Litchfield
Northern Terminus: Main St., Frankfort
Length: 5.69 miles (9.16 km)
Orientation: North-South (No cardinal tabs posted along route)
Counties: Herkimer
Cities: None
Villages: Frankfort
Towns: Frankfort
Name(s): Litchfield St.
History:

NY 171 is the only signed touring route that does not have a direct connection to another signed touring route, thanks to the construction of the current NY 5S expressway alignment in the early 1970s. NY 171 and NY 5S do cross paths south of the Village of Frankfort, but the two routes are grade separated.
Recommendation:

Decomissioning the current NY 171 alignment and transferring maintenance to Herkimer County. We also recommend the NY 171 designation be moved to the current NY 7A alignment in Broome County to match PA 171 which would be extended from its current northern terminus at US 11 in nearby Great Bend.
