Length: 22.49 miles (36.21 km)
Orientation: East-West
Counties: Albany, Greene

Towns: Rensselaer, Durham, Greenville, New Baltimore, Coxsackie

History:

NY 81 originally extended west to Middleburgh (NY 30) via NY 145. NY 81's western terminus was truncated in 1938.
Recommendation:

Renumbering NY 81 to eliminate the duplication with Interstate 81. We suggest the new number be NY 530. In conjunction with the renumbering, the new designation would extend west along Albany CR 354, Schoharie CR 3, and Reference Route 990V to NY 30 in Gilboa.

Scan from the 1935 Sunoco Rand McNally New York
state map showing NY 81's northwestern extension to Middleburgh.
