* At the eastern end, NY 5S originally extended to downtown Schenectady but was truncated to its current location as a result of the construction of I-890 during the 1970s and 1980s.
* Expressway replaced two lane section from downtown Utica to Frankfort in the early 1970s. Super-2 replaced two lane section from Frankfort to Mohawk in the early 1990s.
* NY 5S's alignment through the village of Ilion was changed around 1970 as part of an urban renewal project. The alignment shifted one block north from Main St. to Clark St.
* A portion of NY 5S west of Fort Hunter carried I-90/Thruway westbound traffic while Thruway bridges over Schoharie Creek were rebuilt following a bridge collapse that killed ten people in April 1987.
