Additional History: The existing segments of NY 24 are part of the original routing, which was one continuous route until 1941. The decommissioned sections ran along local roads running roughly alongside the Long Island Railroad. The route was almost made continuous again, as NY 24 was the original designation of the Long Island Expressway when it was built in the late 1950's and early 1960's. However, NY 24 was returned to its original alignment and the LIE was given the NY 495 designation.
